The history of the Thurston Classic Hot Air Balloon Festival began in 1988 when a group of volunteers wanted to commemorate the feats of the Thurston Family who were involved with ballooning in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Each year, a number of balloons will come into town to participate in several events such as the night glow, "hare & hound", and sanctioned races. During these events, balloons can be seen in the clouds of Crawford County. Bring the whole family out because the Thurston Classic is free and open to the public.
The event takes place June 13-16 at Allegheny College Roberston Athletic Complex. Check out the list of events below.

Come see “Rocket the Flying Squirrel” and other balloons as they are inflated and illuminated in the evening sky.

TIMBERCREEK TAP & TABLE’S “HARE & HOUND” • Approximately 6:30 pm
The competition begins as the Hare Balloon takes off, chased by the Hound Balloons to see who finds the Hare and scores closest to the target the Hare lays out at landing. Food and drinks available.

SANCTIONED RACE #2 • Approximately 6:30 pm
Balloons will be flying into the complex from outlying areas and pilots will attempt to score by tossing a bean bag from their balloon at a target laid on the ground.

Please note that events are subject to weather which could cause cancellations or delays. No seating is provided so make sure to bring lawn chairs or blankets. Food, drinks, and souvenirs are available during the event and donations are always welcome.
