Many children rely on the free meals they receive during the school year, but what happens when school is out for summer? Many low-income families do not have enough food to eat or unable to groceries during the summer months. However, the USDA offers a Summer Food Service Program across the country in different places such as schools, gyms, local YMCA's etc.
Many families and kids do not even know these programs exist but to raise awareness, No Kid Hungry runs a summer meal texting service. Parents, grandparents and caregivers nationwide can simply text ‘FOOD’ or ‘COMIDA’ to 877-877 to find free summer meals sites in their area.
